Well, it has finally happened. Israel, and its reputation for invincibily, has been "destroyed" albeit indirectly. Without Egypt on its side Israel will be as isolated as ever and pressure them to completely revise its policies towards the Palestinians and the Arab world.
What's amazing about this "destruction" of Israel is who are taking part in it. Not only do we see the usual suspects from the left but a good number of rightwing politicians in the US Congress and the media! They're all calling for a true democratic state in Egypt which can only lead to an abrogation with its ties with the US and Israel and establish a new relationship with them on Egypt's own terms.
As much as Israel hates all of this there's nothing it can do. Especially when even someone like Senator John McCain is calling for Mubarak to step down.
For the longest time Israel has been able to dictate the terms of its debate with the Palestinians thanks to political powerhouses like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. No one in the US Congress and the White House dared to contradict Israel.
So why would any American politician in his right mind call for a democratic state in Egypt? Because they know that's their only chance to really have an impact on US policies toward Israel. I bet everyone was waiting for a moment like this since any expression of sympathy for the Palestinians' national aspirations is political suicide in the US.
Finally, a chance to let Israel know they've taken the matter too far. This is going to be a huge relief for many politicians who I'm sure never felt comfortable going along with just about every Israeli act in the Occupied Territories, and having to vote for bills in Congress supporting Israel regardless of how destructive its behavior is.
On the other hand, Israel can't be too surprised about any of this. They know full well they've been taking way too many liberties with international law and US aid to their country. It's almost as if the bullies were given the chance to run their High School.
All of this can only be good news to everyone. It sure is not the end of the world, at least not as prophesied in the Bible. Even the Israelis will feel relieved to put an end to their charade and for once get serious with the Palestinians to reach a final peace agreement that will stand the test of time. A new beginning that will give Israel the chance to redeem itself of its horrible past and that can only enrich it as a country and as part of the Middle East.
