As a Palestinian I find it very odd how the US media and congresspeople have shown so much respect for the wishes of the Egyptian people who're trying to get rid of their autocratic rulers even after these rulers have gone overboard to toe the line to keep the US and Israel happy for the last 30 years.
Even FOX News has been careful not to bad mouth the Egyptians and to also show understanding and respect for their desire to live in a free and democratic state.
But when it comes to Palestinians demanding their independence and freedom from the longest military occupation (43 years and counting) all hell breaks lose in the US MSM and the halls of Congress. It's like watching someone have a panic attack and a sissy fit at the same time. All of a sudden it becomes personal with reporters and politicians all over the place showing irritation and at times trying hard to show they don't care as a way to insult the Palestinians.
People get all philosophical about our situation, "Well, you know, the fact that Israel is occupying and taking your land, or uprooting you trees, or allowing Jewish settlers to occupy or demolished your house, or imprisoned or killed a family member, or keeps on erasing Palestinian villages out of the face of the Earth, or goes over to Gaza and slaughters hundreds of children, you know, that doesn't mean you should hurt an Israeli or get all that upset about your situation..."
The whole thing is so bizarre precisely because there's no need for Israel to do any of the things they do to us on a daily basis and yet we're asked to put up with it as if we were a bunch of rabid dogs that can never be allow outside their cage. It's like we're hopeless, born defective and useless to deal with in human terms.
Judge a man by what he does with his freedom and not by what he does under a ruthless military occupation. And judging from how we Palestinians have done with our freedoms all around the world I can safely say we're behaving very responsibly. We work, we vote, we don't blow ourselves up.
But for some reason Americans who work in Congress and the media get all uptight about our situation and can't hardly bring themselves to say anything nice about us, or to wish Israel ends its occupation once and for all. The job the pro-Israel lobbies have done to brainwash and scare these Americans silly is truly amazing.
But perhaps that's why most reporters, editors and congresspeople are siding with the Egyptians against Mubarak and his regime. Finally, a chance to let Israel know, albeit indirectly, that having a democratic Middle East with people free to choose thier own destiny is not that bad after all. It's like the protests in Egypt (and Tunisia, Yemen, Jordan, etc) has been a big releif for many in the US because for once they don't have to toe the Israeli line. It's not all about Israel anymore.
It's as if what's going on in the Middle East is as much about people freeing themselves from old regimes as it is the US media and Congress freeing itself from under the dominance of the insanly pro-Israel regime in the US.
